What Not to Wear - Manly Style!!!

The other night, Ryan and I watched a What Not to Wear episode featuring a guy. Surprisingly, he was interested in what was going on! He's been wearing casual clothes to work all summer, but once school starts for the kids he has to switch to business casual. His business casual wardrobe right now is AWFUL, and so, while he's actually being open to suggestions, I'm going to try to help him build it. He actually suggested skin care for himself!! I bought him a line with a scrub, shaving cream, and aftershave and so far so good! I'm impressed :-)

Any ideas right off the bat? It won't take much to make an improvement. What he would wear at his old job on a regular basis was black dress shoes, WHITE SOCKS (holy crap.), meh pants, and polos, which quite frankly are not that flattering on someone who carries his weight in the stomach.

While this picture isn't business casual, maybe it'll give you some idea. And, it will show you the atrocity of the white socks :-P

I would suggest you go to KG Men's store--there's on right by you in Richfield and Burlington Coat Factory (off 100 North near Excelsior). They both carry extended sizes of dress clothes that are reasonably priced, and both have a tailor on site. I think clothes fitting correctly is half the battle, and it's worth it to have your clothes tailored if needed. DH has purchased a lot of clothing there and the service, especially at KG at times, can be very helpful. Someone may be able to help you select clothes that are more flattering. But, yes, get rid of the white socks. Actually, they're fine with shorts, but NOT with pants!

Okay, business casual means trousers or khakis, a button down shirt that is not made of knitwear, such as a oxford dress shirt or a button down chambray shirt, possibly a tie, depending on how formal he wants to go, and loafers with dress socks, they might be called trouser socks.

The pants should fit well, so the pockets should lay flat. Try on both pleated and flat front pants to see which type looks better on his frame.

When he sits down the shirt should not be tight, ie about to bust a button. The shirt should also be long enough so that when he bends or crouches it doesn't come untucked from his pants.

Look in stores like JC Penney or Kohls, as they have big and tall sections, and shouldn't cost too much.

White socks are fine with sneakers or work/hiking boots only. If he doesn't like wearing sneakers then he should wear dark socks or go sock-less.
